Change Can Be Scary
Asking the right questions to move forward
November 2025
Making changes can be scary. Even when we know something isn’t quite right, the idea of stepping into the unknown can bring up all sorts of fears and “what ifs.”
About a year ago, my husband and I started to feel that something was missing in the place we were living. When we moved to Rutland, we genuinely thought it would be our forever home. We loved it, and we certainly didn’t want to go through the stress of moving again!
But over the four years we lived there, things changed. We changed. Our priorities evolved, and as we became clearer about the things that truly fill our cups, we realised that Rutland wasn’t the best fit for our life anymore.
Through lots of conversations and reflection, we began to see that Glasgow could offer more of the things we like spending our time doing. But of course, that idea came with a wave of fears:
-
What if we don’t like it?
-
It’s a big move… what if it’s too far away, too expensive, too stressful?
-
What if we regret leaving our current home?

All those little (or big!) fears can easily become barriers. They can convince us to stay put - to settle for what feels safe, even when our hearts are nudging us towards something new.
And then I asked myself one simple, powerful question:

“What’s the worst that could happen?”

The honest answer? We might not like it. And if that happened, we could always just move again.
Suddenly, the decision didn’t feel so heavy - the fear didn’t disappear, but it lost its power. When I reframed the situation through that question, it became clear that the potential reward far outweighed the risk.
So we made the move, and it’s been absolutely the right one for us right now.
The truth is, things change. People change. Priorities change. And that’s okay. The goal isn’t to remove fear but to recognise it, question it, and choose to move forward anyway.
Sometimes all it takes is one powerful question to shift your perspective — from what if it goes wrong? to what if it goes right?

Coaching Reflection

Next time you find yourself hesitating over a change, try asking yourself:
-
What’s really behind this fear?
-
What’s the worst that could happen - and could I handle that?
-
What’s the best that could happen if I took the leap?

You might be surprised by how those questions open the door to courage, clarity, and growth.
